Carrying out your own Formal Visual Inspections:
Any person who is competent to do so may carry out a Formal Visual Inspection (FVI), and this should be recorded, though a simple tick and date on the equipment register, together with the name of the inspecting person, is sufficient to satisfy this condition.
When we do your combined Inspection and Test we check that the appliances are in a suitable environment; that no hazards are created by the positioning of the equipment, and that the equipment is suitable for the use to which you are putting it.
In spite of Formal Testing being carried out it remains important that all users of the equipment should report any apparent faults as soon as they are noticed, and that any item of equipment about which the user is unhappy about should be isolated and tested before going back into service.
This also applies to an item of equipment if it should suffer a mishap, for example has suffered an impact or an immersion accident, which may have consequences for its ongoing functionality or safety.
All users of electrical equipment at the premises should be familiar with the means of switching off the electricity, both for normal functional use and in the event of an emergency.
